Top cordless vacuums in 2023

Other cordless vacuums with excellent cleaning power

Tineco Pure One S15 Pet: Another high-performing option from Tineco is the Pure One S15 Pet, which is nearly identical to our top choice, the S11. However, it comes with a higher price tag of $500, offering an anti-tangle brush head specifically designed for dealing with excessive pet hair and a free-standing dock that doesn't require wall drilling. It performed well in our sand and rice tests, although the S11 outperformed it in terms of cleaning power and value.

Samsung Jet 90: The Samsung Jet 90 excelled in our mid-pile sand test, proving its ability to tackle thick, plushy carpets by achieving a remarkable mid-pile sand pickup percentage of 98%. It retails for 0, making it a high-end option, but if you have deep carpets in your home, it's definitely worth considering.

Samsung Jet 75: Similar to the Jet 90, the Samsung Jet 75 offers comparable cleaning power and an attractive design. It features a 60-minute battery life, HEPA filtration, and 200 air watts of suction. The main difference is that the Jet 90 comes with a free-standing dock, while the Jet 75 requires wall drilling for its dock. Although it didn't perform as well as the Jet 90 in the mid-pile sand test, it still offered solid overall performance at a slightly lower price point of 0.

Dyson V11 Torque Drive: With its automatic floor-adapting motor and LCD display, the Dyson V11 Torque Drive presents itself as a premium choice. Retailing at 0, it delivers consistent cleaning power across all our tests, but it was outperformed by newer models like the Dyson V15 Detect, as well as more affordable options from Tineco and Samsung.

Other cordless vacuum options with great value

Shark Rocket Pet Pro: The Shark Rocket Pet Pro continues to be a solid budget choice in 2023, provided it is in stock. Retailing for under $300, it offers excellent cleaning performance on hardwood floors and with small debris, along with satisfactory pickup power on carpets and with dust. It features HEPA filtration and a self-cleaning, anti-tangle brush head that prevents pet hair clogs. Plus, it can convert into a convenient handheld cleaner when needed.

Moosoo XL-618: While the Moosoo XL-618 didn't excel in our toughest tests, it proved to be a capable cleaner for basic tasks, especially with crumbs and on hardwood floors. It can also transform into a handheld vacuum for cleaning cars or furniture. Retailing for $150, and frequently on sale for around $100, it offers an affordable option if you're willing to sacrifice some cleaning power to save money.

How we evaluate cordless vacuums

Testing cordless vacuums is less complex than assessing robot vacuum cleaners, but it still requires significant time and effort to identify the best cordless vacuum options.

To start, we selected 15 of the latest models from reputable vacuum brands with high user ratings and reviews. We subjected them to a series of tests designed to measure their overall performance. We also tested vacuums across various price ranges to assess the impact of cost on their effectiveness.

Evaluating cordless vacuums on different surfaces

We conducted straight-line tests on three different surfaces: hardwood, low-pile carpet, and mid-pile carpet. The test area on all three surfaces measured 30.25 inches in length.

The width of the test area corresponds to the vacuum's nozzle width, which we measured ourselves. We also used the nozzle width, combined with the type of flooring, to calculate the soil density for each test, following guidelines from the International Electrotechnical Commission. This global standards body is responsible for managing testing procedures for vacuum manufacturers, among other things.

Noteworthy Mentions

  • Samsung Jet 90 Complete: The Samsung Jet 90 Complete offers a great alternative to the Dyson V15 Detect for those who desire a slightly larger dirt compartment and a generally similar performance. It does not have the dirt sensor and automatic power adjustment features of the Dyson vacuum. Read our review
  • LG CordZero A9 [A916, A916BM]: The LG CordZero A9 is a relatively simple cordless stick vacuum. It performs quite well in terms of build quality, maneuverability, and overall performance. However, unlike newer models like the Shark Stratos Cordless, it does not have automatic suction power adjustment. Read our review
  • Samsung Jet 70: The Samsung Jet 70 shares many similarities with the more affordable Samsung Jet 60, using the same 150AW motor and 1800 mAh battery. However, it includes a more effective multi-surface floorhead. It does have a slightly less powerful motor than the slightly more expensive Samsung Jet 75 and uses lower-capacity batteries, resulting in a shorter runtime. Read our review
  • Wyze Cordless Vacuum: The Wyze Cordless Vacuum is a budget-friendly cordless stick vacuum that outperforms the JASHEN V16 on most surfaces but has fewer attachments. Replacement parts, like the battery and filter, are also difficult to find. Read our review

If you have children or grandchildren who leave biscuit crumbs all over the place, this vacuum will quickly suck them up. In fact, during our tests, it picked up 107 percent of the debris we laid down.

It is also a powerful cleaner on hard floors, short pile carpet, and floorboards, effectively lifting most dirt in just one sweep. It performs decently on long pile as well. Its maneuverability is impressive, particularly when cleaning a car.

On eco mode, the battery lasts for over an hour, while on multiple speeds, it provides 21 minutes of use. The quick charger can give you more power in just one hour, although the initial charge took over four hours. It may not be the most comfortable to use, and attaching accessories to the base can be a bit tricky. However, emptying the dust canister is effortless.

How we assess stick vacuum cleaners

best stick vacuums. We put each cordless vacuum cleaner through rigorous testing on three different types of floors: carpet, laminate, and floorboards. Firstly, we evaluate general pick-up performance using a specific dust formulation created by our experts at GHI. We measure the exact amount of dust collected by each vacuum after a set number of sweeps.

Does it excel at picking up pet hair? We enlist the help of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and grind pet hair into the carpet before vacuuming to simulate the toughest scenario.

We also assess the vacuum's ability to pick up small debris, such as crumbs, especially in handheld mode.

Additionally, we conduct an interior car cleaning test to evaluate how well each vacuum handles crevices, followed by a stair cleaning test to assess maneuverability.

We consider the design, ease of use, instructions, and any innovative features. Finally, we assign each vacuum a final score to determine the best options available.

best stick vacuums.Testing the performance of stick vacuums on short pile carpet and hard flooring

Do cordless vacuums match the performance of corded ones?

best stick vacuums.Indeed, they do. However, whether they perform equally well in your home depends on several factors. If you have a larger home and prefer completing all your cleaning tasks in one go, the smaller capacity and limited battery life of stick vacuums may not be ideal. In such cases, a cylinder vacuum could be a more suitable alternative.

However, if you prefer a room-by-room approach and don't mind emptying the canister or recharging the battery more frequently, a stick vacuum can be just as effective, if not better, than a corded one.

    Best Premium Choices

Best Premium Cordless VacuumsPremium cordless vacuums are priced above the $500 range. These models offer the most power and longest run time.

These top-of-the-line options have the highest airflow and suction capabilities, delivering superior results in cleaning embedded debris on carpets.

Additionally, premium vacuums are well-crafted and often feature a quick-release lever for effortless interchanging of accessories.

Unfortunately, these products come with a high price tag, typically exceeding three figures.

Overall, the Dyson V15 Detect is the top choice, offering exceptional performance, extended run time, and advanced features.

It is the optimal cordless vacuum for deep cleaning carpets, thanks to its sustained pick-up in the middle setting.

However, it is also the most expensive option, regardless of where it is purchased.

For those seeking a more affordable alternative to the Dyson V15, options like the Simplicity S65 deliver nearly comparable performance without the premium price.

    Affordable Alternatives for Budget Shoppers

Finally, we have the low-cost cordless vacuums. These options are the most affordable and are perfect for budget-conscious individuals who want a cost-effective cord-free vacuum.

Surprisingly, some of these alternatives have above-average airflow, so their cleaning performance is not far behind mid-priced or premium models.

However, the main drawback of these budget options is their lack of proper filtration. Despite claims of HEPA filtration, none of these vacuums pass the fog test.

This means that fine dust particles and allergens may escape through the exhaust.

Therefore, I would not recommend these options for individuals with allergies.

    Best Robot Vacuums

Roomba Combo J7 vs. Roborock S7For those who want to automate their vacuuming tasks, robot vacuums are a great option.

Recent advancements in navigation and battery technology have made robot vacuums viable alternatives to traditional stick vacuums.

However, their added technology comes at a higher cost compared to regular stick vacuums.

Popular brands such as Roborock and iRobot offer excellent options in this category.

Nevertheless, brands like Yeedi, Shark, and Dreame provide alternative choices to Roomba or Roborock for individuals on a tighter budget.

      Value for Money: Tineco A11

      Tienco A11

      Advantages

      • Lightweight design
      • Superior cleaning performance at a moderate price point
      • Includes two detachable batteries.
      • Abundance of attachments
      • Adequately-sized dustbin

      Disadvantages

      • Not as agile as a Dyson
      • Experienced leakage during the fog test
      • Filter quickly accumulates dirt (requires regular cleaning)
The Tineco A11 may very well be the most cost-effective option among all the stick vacuums I've tested, delivering premium cleaning performance at a mid-range price.

Tineco is a brand striving to surpass Dyson in the cordless vacuum market, and the A11 is one of their exceptional products.

Depending on the specific model you select, it comes with either the standard nozzle only or with the addition of a soft roller attachment.

Tineco A11 main cleaning heads view underneathOne notable selling point of the A11 is its wide range of attachments.

Tineco A11 toolsThese tools are profoundly beneficial in their own right, especially when considering the lightweight design of the A11. It excels in above-the-floor cleaning tasks.

While the A11 doesn't have any glaring issues, its steering capabilities are the primary concern.

I have received feedback from a viewer who liked the A11's steering, which is a positive indicator of customer satisfaction.

However, it does lack a tight turning radius and doesn't rotate as sharply as a Dyson.

      Superb Maneuverability: Dyson Omni-Glide

      Dyson Omni Glide full body

      Advantages

      • First-of-its-kind 360-degree steering
      • Incredibly lightweight design
      • Exceptional for cleaning non-carpeted stairs
      • Unmatched maneuverability under furniture

      Disadvantages

      • Incompatible with carpeted surfaces
      • Small dustbin
      • Limited battery life
Most vacuum cleaners operate in four directions: forward, backward, left, and right. However, the Dyson Omni-Glide breaks the mold with its groundbreaking 360-degree steering.

Dyson achieves this feat with a twin roller system and four caster wheels, allowing users to make complete turns while vacuuming in both directions.

Dyson Omni roller underneathThe streamlined design deviates from the typical Dyson stick vacuums, making the Omni Glide truly unique and enabling it to reach further beneath furniture than any other Dyson product.

I appreciate how this feature translates to real-world usage, as I have extensively utilized it to clean my own home.

The Omni Glide proves to be an outstanding choice for compact homes with hard floors.

However, it is not suitable for use on carpeted surfaces, as the rollers do not rotate even on light area rugs.

The cylindrical design isn't optimal for handheld use, but it remains functional, albeit not as efficient as the Micro 1.5KG.

Excellent for Long Hair: DreameTech T30

      DreameTech T30 smart screen

      Advantages

      • Extended battery life (up to 91 minutes)
      • Superior hair pickup on carpet
      • Above-average cleaning performance
      • Detachable battery
      • Interactive screen displaying real-time data including run time

      Disadvantages

      • Less responsive maneuverability
      • No soft roller attachment, making it less efficient on hard floors
      • Visible leakage during the fog test
I felt compelled to include the DreameTech T30 on this list due to its ability to resist tangles caused by long strands of hair.

Its impressive hair resistance can be attributed to its powerful suction and the combs on its brush roll.

Even with the combs located in the middle portion of the brush, the T30 proves capable of preventing tangles, even with 12-inch hair strands.

There was absolutely no wrapping of hair around the brush, even with quantities exceeding one gram.

DreameTech T30 hair wrap on carpetThis wasn't just a small amount of hair, but rather a substantial quantity.

The cleaning performance of the T30 is also exemplary, particularly on carpet where it effectively picks up a high percentage of debris.

However, its deep cleaning ability (94%) falls short compared to other high-end options such as Dyson and Tineco.

Nevertheless, the T30 still resides among the top-tier cordless vacuums.

One drawback of the DreameTech T30 is its subpar maneuverability and the absence of a soft roller attachment.

While its steering mechanism resembles that of a Tineco, it fails to offer the same level of sharpness.

Although the standard cleaning head is capable of picking up debris on hard floors, its efficiency is compromised, necessitating the use of higher settings for heavier debris like sand.

      Budget Option: Moosoo K17

      Moosoo K17

      Advantages

      • Budget-friendly cordless stick vacuum choice
      • Lightweight design
      • High-end cleaning performance on both hard floors and carpets

      Disadvantages

      • Significant leakage during the fog test
      • Lacks responsive maneuverability
      • Limited number of tools
Last but not least on this list is the Moosoo K17. This affordable stick vacuum stands out as one of the best performing options on the list, making it an excellent value choice for budget-conscious shoppers.

It achieves an impressively high percentage in both surface and deep cleaning tests.

However, it may not boast the same level of quality as premium brands in terms of fit and finish.

Nonetheless, its superior debris pickup capabilities contribute to its widespread popularity.

Unfortunately, the Moosoo K17 is no longer available on Amazon, but it can still be found in stores like Walmart and on Moosoo's website.

Another drawback of the K17 is its lackluster filtration system, a common trait among most budget cordless vacuums. Allergy sufferers may need to consider the Jashen V16.

Superior Robot Vacuum: Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra

Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra base station and robot

      Advantages

      • Most versatile robot vacuum option with pad-washing and self-emptying capabilities
      • Efficient navigation
      • Exceptional surface debris pickup
      • Feature-rich app with regular updates
      • Decent obstacle avoidance
      • Effective auto-empty functionality

      Disadvantages

      • Exorbitantly expensive
      • Below-average deep cleaning performance
The S7 MaxV Ultra represents one of Roborock's latest offerings and is the first model to introduce pad-washing and self-emptying features.

With the introduction of the S8 MaxV Ultra, it is expected that the price of the S7 MaxV will decrease, resulting in cost savings for consumers.

This robot vacuum stands out as the best option due to its combination of efficient navigation, obstacle avoidance, hands-free convenience, feature-rich app, and above-average cleaning performance.

Roborock S7 MaxV coiled wires testWhile it may not possess the deep cleaning capabilities of a Roomba product, its exceptional performance in surface debris cleaning, mopping, and navigation makes up for this slight deficiency.

One significant drawback, however, is its hefty price tag. The Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra is unquestionably one of the priciest options on the market.

Which cordless vacuum has the longest battery life [run time]?

Run time is a critical factor to consider when selecting a cordless vacuum. To determine the duration of operation for each model, I conducted tests running the vacuum from full to empty using the cleaning nozzle and non-powered tools.

The overall winner in terms of single battery run time is the Roidmi X30, surpassing its claim of 70 minutes by over 110 minutes.

The Roborock H7 comes in second place with a run time of 91 minutes. However, please note that these results were obtained using non-powered tools.

The ultimate winner, when factoring in cleaning head usage, is the V11 Outsize, reaching an impressive 85 minutes with the torque drive attachment on hard floors.

Likewise, in the carpet test, the V11 Outsize outlasted its competitors, lasting up to 64 minutes.

Another aspect to consider regarding run time is whether the batteries are detachable.

Removable batteries make it easier to extend the run time or replace them if necessary.

Which cordless vacuum is the loudest?

Next, let's evaluate the noise levels of various cordless vacuum options. Most of the results presented below are obtained with the cleaning nozzle attached, as this configuration is typically used with cordless vacuums.

Regrettably, a high-performing cordless vacuum is seldom quiet, as models with superior airflow and suction tend to generate more noise.

Which cordless vacuum has the most powerful suction and airflow?

Suction is another crucial criterion we will explore. Below are the results of my experiments using a water lift gauge, suction gauge, and Y-gauge. It's important to note that this is a recent test that is still in progress, and not all vacuums have been tested as of now.

In my opinion, the most accurate test is the unsealed test, as it represents the true working suction of a vacuum.

Surprisingly, the Dreame T30 exhibits the most impressive overall suction in both the sealed (direct) and unsealed (Y-gauge) tests, closely followed by the Dyson V15 Detect.

The Roborock H7 is a remarkable third place contender in the direct sealed test, followed by the V11 Outsize.

Now, let's delve into the airflow test results.

There is a direct correlation between high airflow and performance, particularly on carpets.

Cordless vacuums that excel in this category typically exhibit superior performance in removing embedded sand during deep cleaning tests.

The Dyson V15 Detect reigns supreme as the best cordless vacuum in terms of airflow, boasting an impressive 73 CFM (cubic feet per minute), the only option surpassing the 70 CFM threshold.

This impressive airflow contributes significantly to making it one of the top vacuuming stick vacuums.

      Cleaning Performance Comparison

Next, let's compare the cleaning performance of these vacuums against each other using the new metrics.

I have compiled a list of the (most) cordless stick vacuums I have tested, taking into account their performance in various categories.

      * Please note that no carpet tests were conducted since the Omni Glide rollers do not function on this surface.

The V11 Outsize emerges as the overall winner, achieving a perfect score of 100% in all five categories.

Coming in at a close second place is the V15 Detect, maintaining an impressive average score of 99.91%.

There are a few surprising contenders in this comparison, such as the Tineco A10 and A11, both of which fall within the mid-priced range while performing exceptionally well.

Which cordless vacuum is the most effective on hard floors?

My advice to consumers seeking a cordless vacuum specifically for hard floors is to select one equipped with a soft roller.

Most options featuring a soft roller excel at cleaning debris on this type of surface.

And despite achieving a perfect score, I wouldn't recommend the Dyson V11 Outsize for hard floors due to its inefficiency.

The V11 Outsize attained its high scores using the auto and max settings.

Furthermore, its inefficient performance is evident in the test results.

During the forward pass, it left a trail of sand, a problem that can be avoided with a soft roller.

When choosing a hard floor vacuum, consumers should also consider additional features offered by different brands.

Shark and Dyson, for instance, have introduced innovative features to enhance efficiency when cleaning hard floors.

Dyson's V15 introduces a green laser light that greatly enhances visibility of dust particles, setting it apart from other cordless vacuums.

Shark's Vertex model has upgraded its Duo Clean Nozzle, incorporating combs to prevent hair tangles more effectively.

Cheaper options such as the Tineco A11, Dyson V8, Dyson Micro, Dyson Omni Glide, and LG CordZero do not offer the aforementioned features.

While Tineco products perform well on hard floors, their maneuverability may not be as responsive.

The Dyson Micro and Omni-Glide models are the lightest options and best suited for use in smaller homes where high dirt capacity is not a requirement.

It is advisable to avoid a vacuum without a soft roller, as it compromises efficiency.

Products such as the Miele Triflex and Dyson V7 do not perform well on hard floors due to their low-profile nozzles.

While these models can handle small debris, they struggle with larger piles, such as oatmeal.

In conclusion, when it comes to finding the best cordless vacuum, there are plenty of top contenders to choose from. After thorough testing and analysis, the Samsung Bespoke Jet Pro Extra VS20A95973B/WA, Henry Quick, and Bosch Serie | 8 Unlimited Gen2 Silver have proven to be standout performers. For those on a budget, the Beko PowerClean Cordless Vacuum Cleaner VRT94929VI and Shark Stratos Pet Pro Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner with Anti Hair Wrap Plus & Clean Sense IQ IZ420UKT [Double Battery] offer excellent value for money. However, for those seeking the ultimate cleaning experience, the Dyson V15 Detect reigns supreme as the best overall cordless vacuum. So whether you have hard floors, long hair, or are looking for a powerful and quiet performance, there's a cordless vacuum out there to suit your needs. Make your cleaning routine a breeze with the best cordless vacuum that matches your preferences and get ready to say goodbye to traditional corded vacuums for good.
