Historical Background

Ulta was established by Richard E. George, the former President of Osco Drug, Inc., and Terry Hanson. In 1989, George departed from his position at Osco to create a business strategy for a retail company that would offer beauty products at varying price points.[4] Other executives from Osco joined George and Hanson, raising $11.5 million in venture capital. The company, initially named Ulta3, was launched in 1990 with the opening of five stores in the suburbs of Chicago. The name was later changed from Ulta3 to Ulta in late 1999.[4][5]

In 1995, George departed from Ulta3, and Hanson took over as the company's Chief Executive Officer.[5] In December 1999, Lyn Kirby assumed the roles of President and chief executive officer, while Charles "Rick" Weber became the Senior Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Financial Officer.
