While most mapping robots allow you to create virtual keep-out zones, the j7 uses AI intelligence to suggest potential problem areas, making it effortless to create keep-out zones with just a tap.

The S7's standout feature is its vibrating mop, which simulates traditional scrubbing by vibrating at a rate of 3,000 times per second. Paired with a generously sized water tank, the mop can efficiently achieve the desired level of dampness for effective cleaning.
The S7 also impresses with its "VibraRise" function, which automatically lifts the mop a few millimeters when it detects carpet, preventing any moisture from coming into contact with your rugs. Additionally, I appreciate that I don't need to change the mopping pad when switching to vacuum-only mode, which is often required with other hybrid models. However, the VibraRise feature is only suitable for low-pile rugs, so I created a no-mopping zone around my plush carpets.

The S7 is an exceptional hybrid robot that offers effective mopping capabilities at a reasonable price. However, it does require manual effort as you need to refill the water reservoir (the vacuum doesn't provide a warning when it's empty) and wash the mopping pads (they can be placed in the washing machine).
Another advantage of the S7 is its ability to function as two independent robots - a vacuum and a mop. It has a dedicated mop-only mode that follows a tighter "Z" pattern and covers the floors twice. I find it convenient to first send it out to vacuum the entire area, then recharge it and send it out again to mop, resulting in beautifully clean floors. However, this process does take approximately five hours in total.
The Roborock S7 Plus combines the S7 robot vacuum with an auto-empty dock, but it comes at a higher price.
The Roborock S7 swiftly maps your home using lidar sensors. It offers room-specific cleaning commands (via the app or voice control with Alexa, Google, or Siri) and allows you to designate keep-out zones. This is crucial because it lacks AI obstacle avoidance and may get stuck in standard obstacles like cable clusters. It also struggles with navigating tight spaces due to its relatively wide size.
For those who prioritize AI obstacle avoidance and seek a deeper clean with dual roller brushes, the Roborock S8 will be available in April for 9.99. Nonetheless, considering the current sale price, the S7 remains the superior option.

Top Upper Mid-Range Robot Vacuum Cleaner
If you're searching for a slightly more affordable option, the iRobot Roomba S9 is one of the robot vacuums we've tested. When compared to the Roborock S7 MaxV, it doesn't come with a mopping attachment and has a simpler optical sensor-based system without LIDAR mapping or real-time hazard identification and avoidance capabilities. However, it still utilizes a vSLAM system to create a detailed map of its cleaning area. You can conveniently control it using the companion app, allowing you to define specific areas or set boundaries that it won't cross. It also includes an efficient onboard HEPA filter that effectively captures pet dander and other particles. The S9 model even features a self-emptying dock, eliminating manual intervention when emptying the dustbin and preventing the spread of dust and debris.
If you're willing to forgo the onboard HEPA filter, the yeedi vac station offers self-emptying capability at a much lower price. It also comes with a passive mopping system, although its stain-clearing capabilities are not as effective.

For those looking to spend as little as possible, the Neato D8 is the best budget-friendly robot vacuum cleaner we've tested. It has a shorter maximum battery life of 70 minutes compared to the Roborock Q5, so it may need to return to its base station for recharging when cleaning larger areas. It doesn't support a self-emptying base station, which means more hands-on maintenance is required. However, the Neato D8 offers quick and accurate LIDAR mapping at a more affordable price than the Roborock. It allows you to define virtual boundary lines to restrict certain areas from cleaning. Just keep in mind that it requires a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network for connection. The vacuum's squared-off front end may be prone to getting caught on furniture.
The performance on flat, even surfaces is excellent, and it does a decent job of handling debris on carpets, although it may need to make multiple passes to collect everything. A notable feature is its automatic suction power adjustment based on the surface it's cleaning, which is rare but welcome at this price point.

Just unbox the machine and its base, plug in the base, and download the companion mobile app to complete the setup. The robot connects to WiFi, enabling you to control it remotely through the app or by using voice commands with Google Assistant and Alexa. During its first run, the Shark performs an "Explore Run" to generate a map of your home, which you can edit later from the app.
The Shark successfully created an accurate floor plan of my two-bedroom apartment, and I appreciated the option to re-explore if the map didn't meet my expectations. Once a complete map is established, you can label different rooms in your home. This allows you to instruct the Shark to clean specific areas, define "no-go" zones, and more.
In the beginning, I had the Shark vacuum the entire apartment for a few cycles. I was impressed by how quiet it operated compared to other robot vacuums I've tried. Although you may need to increase the volume on your TV if it's cleaning in the same room, you'll hardly notice it when it's vacuuming debris down the hallway. It also navigated well around the cat toys on the floor. While the object detection feature claims to avoid objects as small as four inches, I found it to be more efficient at maneuvering around the three-foot-long cat tunnel rather than the smaller mouse toys.
Moreover, the Shark required minimal attention from me during cleaning sessions. The best robot vacuums can handle the cleaning process independently, moving around obstacles and returning to their base when done. The Shark adhered to this expectation, allowing me to simply let it do its job. Of course, I made sure to clear the floor of clothing and charging cables beforehand, as recommended by most companion apps.
This particular Shark model comes with a clean base that automatically empties the dustbin after each cleaning job. In case the bin fills up before completion, the Shark will pause, empty it in the base, and then resume cleaning. What I found most convenient about the base is its bagless design. Unlike other robot vacuum clean bases that require proprietary garbage bags, the Shark's base allows for easy removal of debris without the need for bags. Simply snap off part of the base, empty it, and securely reattach. This not only provides convenience but also reduces the long-term cost of ownership, as you won't have to continuously purchase special bags.
It's worth noting that Shark offers similar models to the RV2502AE with slight variations in color scheme, clean base capacity (30 versus 60 days), and other minor differences. The primary differentiating factor is the clean base capacity, so if you prefer minimal interaction with your robot vacuum, we recommend opting for the 60-day models.

The Roomba j7 by iRobot remains a fantastic choice for those seeking the latest obstacle avoidance technology in an appealing package. The acquisition of iRobot by Amazon hasn't brought about significant changes, as the Roomba j7 is still an excellent option. While it doesn't include a clean base, you have the option to purchase the same vacuum with a clean base at an additional cost of $200.
The highlight of the Roomba j7 series lies in its advanced AI-driven computer vision, which enables it to detect and navigate around various objects, including pet waste. iRobot even offers a commitment to replace your j7 machine within the first year of ownership if it encounters pet waste during operation.
During my review, I was fortunate to not have to test this feature with my cat, as she strictly used her litter box. In terms of performance, the Roomba j7 effectively suctioned dirt and debris from my apartment, all while producing minimal noise. At this mid-range level, the suction power among the various robo-vacs is fairly similar, resulting in comparable cleaning capabilities.
Similar to other robot vacuums, you can schedule cleaning routines using the iRobot mobile app, eliminating the need for manual intervention. The app also features a "favorites" section, allowing you to create profiles for common cleaning tasks like "clean the living room and entryway." Additionally, the Roomba j7 supports voice commands with Amazon's Alexa and the Google Assistant.
The Roomba j7 incorporates Imprint Smart Mapping. However, unlike the Shark, it required multiple runs through my home to create a complete map. iRobot's app distinguishes between regular cleaning jobs and mapping runs, so it's important to select the appropriate option during the initial operation of the machine.
I tested the j7 model, which meant I experienced the loud noise of the machine emptying its dustbin into the respective base. Unlike other clean bases that involve shaking dirt between two garbage cans, the Shark's base suctioned the dirt from the vacuum. While this process was also present in other machines I tested, the Roomba j7 was particularly loud. The entire process lasted only five to ten seconds, but the initial experience was quite startling. It's important to consider this if you plan to run your self-emptying robot vacuum at night while others are sleeping.
Honorable mention: Anker Eufy RoboVac X8 Hybrid
You might not be familiar with Anker's line of robotic vacuum cleaners, but they often serve as more cost-effective alternatives to popular brands like iRobot and Shark. The Eufy RoboVac X8 Hybrid may not be a budget-friendly option, but it is a reliable robot vacuum that offers unique features not found in many competitors. You can often find it on sale for $549 or even $449.
Unlike our other midrange recommendations, the X8 Hybrid does not include a cleaning base, nor can you purchase one separately. Instead, it functions solely as a standalone robot vacuum. However, the term "hybrid" suggests that it also has mopping capabilities. It features a dustbin for collecting debris and a 250-milliliter water tank that can be filled for mopping cycles. While many other robot vacuums offer this functionality, it can be especially beneficial for homes with extensive tile or hardwood flooring.
Apart from that, the X8 Hybrid impressed me with its effortless setup process, precise mapping technology, and extensive array of additional features. It offers four cleaning modes - auto, room, zone, and spot - as well as four suction levels ranging from Pure to Max. These features provide you with significant control over the cleaning area and power of the device. Interestingly, the X8 Hybrid operated in Pure mode during its initial use and not only was it surprisingly quiet, but it also performed a thorough cleaning despite being set to the lowest suction setting.
Furthermore, the machine includes a "tap and go" feature that allows you to manually select any spot on your home map within the EufyHome app. The robot vacuum will navigate to that specific location to clean. Manual controls are also available, a rarity among robot vacuums. This option enables you to control the machine in a manner akin to a slow and somewhat clumsy RC car, giving you greater control over the cleaning process.
Although the Eufy RoboVac X8 Hybrid may lack the brand recognition of iRobot or Shark, it is a reliable choice, especially if you aren't interested in adding a cleaning base to the equation. And if you happen to find it at a discounted price, it becomes an even more enticing option.

On carpeted surfaces, it functions just like a standard robot vacuum.
The primary advantage of investing in a robot vacuum cleaner is convenience, and iRobot successfully integrates mopping capabilities into their already impressive robot vacuum without sacrificing convenience. While you need to add water and cleaning solution for mopping cycles and manually empty the dustbin after each job, these are minor tasks. The Roomba possesses enough intelligence to handle the rest, ensuring that it doesn't dampen your carpets accidentally. While the included clean base is still useful for vacuumed debris, it doesn't handle excess water.
Apart from the mop function, the Combo essentially operates as a standard Roomba j7, which is a great thing. Since its release, it has become one of our top choices due to its improved obstacle avoidance, powerful suction, accurate home mapping technology, and decent battery life. The reason Shark's vacuum and mop hybrid is our runner-up choice is due to its more hands-on nature. It comes with two dustbins, one for vacuuming only and one for vacuuming and mopping. The latter includes a water reservoir and a detachable mop pad. Switching to the appropriate dustbin for mopping your floors is necessary, and after each job, the dustbin doesn't automatically empty into the clean base because it contains the water reservoir. You will have to manually empty the dustbin, but that is a task you would have to perform anyways when cleaning and refilling the water tank for the next job.
Despite requiring more manual involvement, Shark's robotic vacuum and mop provided a pleasant experience in my testing. The setup process was quick and easy, comparable to the company's standard robot vacuums. During the initial run, it mapped my home, allowing me to label rooms, set up no-go zones and recognize carpeted areas. I could even choose to run a test without mopping to ensure the robot doesn't enter carpeted zones that I marked on the home map. I was delighted by the robot's accurate avoidance of these zones, and I appreciated having extra control over its path. However, this is an additional manual step that iRobot's vac and mop performs automatically through built-in technology.
The Shark vacuum's water-based cleaning abilities are basic but superior to the laborious task of using a traditional mop and bucket. After the Shark completed its mopping pass, my hardwood and tile floors appeared noticeably cleaner. Although, occasionally I will need to use a floor steamer for a more thorough cleaning. Nonetheless, the Shark provides more than enough functionality for biweekly runs and eliminates the need for manual mopping.
Shark's hybrid machine also offers additional advantages. The clean base does not require proprietary garbage bags like iRobot machines, resulting in long-term cost savings. The Roomba s9 may be excessive for most individuals, but it stands as one of the finest robotic vacuums available. From the moment you unbox it, you'll notice its premium features. The s9 is the largest and most attractive robo-vacuum I tested, with a design that can navigate corners, copper accents, and a clean base standing at 1.5 feet tall. Setting it up was a breeze, as it took only a few minutes to connect it to my home's WiFi and the iRobot app.
Although the s9 lacks the Precision Navigation feature found in the newer j7, it compensates with a feature called "Careful Driver," which utilizes a 3D sensor to detect and clean around objects. It should be noted that the s9 isn't specifically designed to avoid pet waste like the j7, so pet owners should take that into consideration. However, with 40 times the suction power of a standard Roomba, the s9 effectively handles pet hair cleanup.
While the s9 is slightly louder than the j7 during cleaning, it isn't bothersome. I noticed that my carpets appeared cleaner thanks to its increased suction power. Additionally, the s9 automatically adjusts its cleaning mode when transitioning from carpet to hardwood floors.
Although the s9 did encounter a few table legs while cleaning, it outperformed other machines in terms of navigation and self-correction when stuck. It also moves at a faster pace than the j7, providing it with more coverage before needing to recharge after approximately an hour of cleaning.
