"In the bygone era, one of the initial changes we observed was the growing emphasis on employability amongst students,” stated Dr. Andrew MacFarlane, QS Rankings Manager, highlighting that this prompted them to reinforce their focus on employability.
“Amidst an intensely competitive global job market, graduates are burdened with unprecedented levels of debt,” he remarked.
As the rankings celebrate their 20th anniversary, one discernible trend they take "immense satisfaction in is the expanding inclusivity of our rankings, providing insights into the distribution of academic excellence worldwide".
Between 2018 and the 2024 edition, there has been a significant surge in the representation of Asian, Latin American, Middle Eastern, and African universities in the World University Ranking. In 2018, these regions constituted 37 percent of the rankings, but in 2024, that figure has risen to 46 percent.
China emerges as a focal point for research
China, in particular, has witnessed a notable ascent in the rankings, driven by their research endeavors, according to MacFarlane.
“They stand as the foremost global producer of research, and their work is increasingly cited,” he disclosed to Euronews Next, indicating that the quality of research produced in China has propelled them up the rankings.
As for the United States and the United Kingdom, both renowned performers, they have experienced a slight decline in the rankings. However, this decline does not necessarily signify a deterioration in their performance. It is also an indication that institutions across the globe are improving and narrowing the gap, clarifies MacFarlane.
“So, while the fastest runner remains the fastest, another contender is gradually closing in on their time,” he explained.
