For most people seeking a general-purpose laptop, a thickness of around half an inch and a weight of 3 pounds or less is recommended. These dimensions define an ultraportable laptop, and for most users, portability is key to maximizing usage and enjoyment.

Adhering to these weight and thickness guidelines typically limits screen sizes to 13 or 14 inches, although larger screens can now be found in the ultraportable category. At these screen sizes, you can choose between traditional clamshell laptops or 2-in-1 convertible designs. The latter offers a hinge that rotates the screen 360 degrees, allowing for tablet-like functionality or propping the laptop up like a tent for watching movies. 

Some laptops running Windows and ChromeOS feature smaller displays, such as 10 or 11 inches. While these are not technically laptops in the traditional sense, they are primarily tablets with detachable keyboards. Unless you specifically require a part-time tablet or the lightest possible laptop, it is advisable to avoid these designs. While they may weigh less than most 13-inch ultraportables, their tablet functionality is subpar compared to Apple's iPad, and the detachable keyboards hinder their effectiveness as laptops, particularly in terms of typing experience.

On the other end of the spectrum, you have 17-inch behemoth laptops. Which Processor Is Best for Your Laptop?

Most ultraportables priced at $1,000 or more utilize Intel's Core i5 or Core i7 processors, or less commonly, AMD's Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 processors.
