Evaluating general travel credit cards
What you get with a general travel cardThe credit cards featured at the top of this page are general travel cards. They are issued by a bank (such as Chase or Capital One) and bear only the bank's name. They are not tied to any specific airline or hotel group. With these cards, you earn points on every purchase, typically 1 to 2 points per dollar spent, and sometimes additional points in specific categories.Issuers of general travel cards often entice new applicants with substantial sign-up bonuses, which are usually tens of thousands of miles earned by spending a certain amount of money on the card within the first few months.

So, what can you do with those points? Depending on the card, you may have several redemption options:
- Booking travel: You can use your points to book travel through the issuer's website, similar to how you would use a site like Orbitz or Expedia. For example, if points are valued at 1 cent each for this redemption option, you could book a $400 flight on the issuer's portal and pay with 40,000 points.
- Statement credit: This option allows you to use your points to offset the cost of travel purchases by applying them as a credit on your statement. You can make travel arrangements however you prefer (directly with an airline or hotel, through a travel agency, etc.) and then charge the expense to your card. Once the charge appears on your account, you can apply the necessary points to eliminate the cost.
- Transferring to partners: Some card issuers allow you to transfer your points to loyalty programs for airlines or hotel chains, essentially turning your general travel card into a co-branded card (though you will not receive the same perks as a co-branded card).
- Cash back, gift cards, or merchandise: If you do not plan on traveling, you can use your rewards for cash back, gift cards, or merchandise. However, note that the value per point is often lower for these options.
- Travel credit: Many top travel credit cards provide automatic reimbursements for travel-related spending. Some of these cards offer hundreds of dollars in travel credits each year.
- Trusted traveler reimbursement: A growing number of travel credit cards cover the application fee for programs like TSA Precheck and Global Entry, which allow for faster airport security and customs processing.
- Airport lounge access: Several general travel cards offer access to airport lounges through networks such as Priority Pass and Airspace. These lounges operate independently from airlines and provide travelers with added comfort and amenities.
These programs differ in terms of point value and redemption options available. Some programs offer a wide range of redemptions, including transfers to loyalty programs, while others only allow for travel bookings or statement credit.

Is it Worth Getting a Travel Credit Card?
If you frequently travel and typically pay for your purchases with cash or debit, you're missing out on rewards and benefits that can significantly reduce your travel expenses. Obtaining a travel credit card that offers generous rewards on airfare, hotels, rideshares, and other common travel expenses can provide you with significant savings.By utilizing one of the aforementioned travel cards, you can accumulate over $2,000 in rewards within a span of five years, effectively offsetting the cost of past travel expenses or even funding an upcoming vacation.
Who Should Apply for a Travel Credit Card?
If you're considering applying for a travel credit card, it's important to note that card issuers generally require applicants to have good credit or excellent credit (scores above 670). Therefore, it is crucial that you check your credit score before applying for a travel card.Once you know your credit score and can verify your prequalification for a travel card, you can proceed to choose the card that best suits your needs and submit your application.
How to Select a Travel Credit Card
Choosing a travel credit card involves considering various factors such as the type of rewards offered, the accompanying benefits, and any associated fees. There is no universally applicable solution. Instead, focus on cards that align with your specific travel preferences. Here are some questions to guide you in selecting the best travel credit card for your needs.
Do You Prefer Travel Rewards or Cash Back?
Cards that accumulate travel rewards generally provide the highest value when redeemed for flights, hotels, or other travel-related expenses. Alternatively, if you prioritize flexibility in rewards, opt for cards that offer cash back on everyday spending.
What Is the Welcome Bonus?
Most cards offer an initial bonus in the form of points, miles, or cash back. This bonus is awarded after achieving the minimum spending requirements. It can rapidly boost your earnings and potentially offset the card's annual fee within the first year.
Is the Annual Fee Justified?
Speaking of annual fees, many travel credit cards charge them, with premium cards reaching nearly 0 per year. Consider the value of the rewards and benefits provided by the card to ensure they outweigh the fee. If you only travel occasionally, a high-end card may not be worth the cost.
Are There Foreign Transaction Fees?
Foreign transaction fees are small charges imposed by banks for purchases made outside the country of the card's origin. While travel credit cards are designed to benefit frequent travelers, some cards do apply foreign transaction fees. Be sure to verify if your card carries this fee.
What Credit Score Is Required for a Travel Credit Card?
The top travel credit cards generally necessitate a good to excellent credit score. If you have no credit history or are working on rebuilding your credit, you may need to start with "beginner" cards before applying for a travel credit card. A score of 670 to 739 is considered good, while scores above that range from very good to excellent.
Card issuers also consider other factors, including income and monthly expenses, during the application review process. Some individual cards may provide a suggested credit score requirement. You can also utilize our CardMatch tool to find the best card recommendations for your situation.

Steps to compare travel credit cards
If you're struggling to narrow down the most suitable travel card for your needs, it can be beneficial to conduct a comparison of different credit cards. Begin by outlining the benefits you desire and any deal breakers, such as an annual fee. Then, examine the cards that offer those desired benefits.
For example, if you're interested in earning rewards for both travel and dining, the Amex Gold Card would be a better choice than the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card due to its higher rewards rate of 4X compared to 2X.
However, if you prefer to avoid a high annual fee, the Venture Card only costs , whereas the Gold Card has a fee of $250. (Examine rates and fees.)
Alternative credit cards to consider
Travel credit cards might not be suitable for everyone. If you don't travel frequently, you should explore other credit card options that cater to specific categories such as dining, grocery, or gas. These cards can reward you with up to 6% cash back in those specific categories, benefiting individuals who enjoy dining out, meal-prepping, or commuting.
Apart from rewards, you may find value in a card that offers a 0% APR period. Some cards grant an introductory period with no interest for a year or more on new purchases and balance transfers, such as the Citi Simplicity® Card. This card provides 0% intro APR for 21 months on balance transfers from the date of the first transfer, as well as 0% intro APR for 12 months on purchases from the date of account opening (afterwards, the APR ranges from 18.99% to 29.74%; balance transfers must be completed within four months of account opening). There is an introductory balance transfer fee of 3% or $5, whichever is greater for transfers completed within the first four months of account opening. After that, the fee becomes 5% of each transfer (minimum $5). Using these cards responsibly can assist you in managing your debt without incurring high interest charges.

Credit cards for hotel rewards
Hotel cobranded cards function similarly to airline cards. These cards allow you to earn rewards that are redeemable within a particular hotel program, such as Hilton or Marriott. Hotel cards offer their own set of benefits, including complimentary elite status or free award-night stays. Additionally, these cards enable you to accumulate points within the hotel's program while also earning rewards through the hotel's proprietary card.
For example, by using the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card, you can earn 6 points per dollar spent at participating Marriott properties, on top of the 10 base points received as a member of the Bonvoy program, and up to 1 additional point from Marriott with guaranteed Silver Elite Status. This means that when using your hotel card to pay for your booking, you can earn a total of 17 points per dollar spent on Marriott stays.

Travel cards for beginners
The world of points and miles can be overwhelming for individuals new to credit cards, but it doesn't have to be. While transferable rewards cards are widely regarded as the best option for earning points and miles for travel, they can also be complex to navigate. Therefore, fixed-value credit cards and cash-back credit cards are excellent alternatives for beginners seeking to enter the travel credit card realm.
Fixed-value credit cards
Fixed-value credit cards award points or miles that always have a consistent value when redeemed. For instance, the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card grants points worth 1 cent each. These cards are particularly suitable for beginners who have yet to familiarize themselves with maximizing transferable points or for casual travelers embarking on their first travel credit card experience.
As more hotels and airlines transition to dynamic pricing models, where award pricing fluctuates dramatically, fixed-value rewards programs are growing in popularity.

Cash-back credit cards
Cash-back credit cards are another fantastic credit card option for casual travelers or beginners. With these cards, you don't need to worry about points, transfer partners, or maximizing your rewards. Cash-back credit cards provide a percentage of cash back based on your spending and offer a straightforward way to save on your upcoming travels.
The Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card is an excellent option for beginners in the realm of travel rewards. It allows you to earn unlimited 5% cash back on hotel and rental car bookings through Capital One Travel, without an annual fee.
Understanding the functioning of travel credit cards
Travel credit cards operate similarly to other reward credit cards, enabling you to earn rewards, primarily in the form of points and miles, on your purchases. This section primarily focuses on transferable rewards credit cards such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve and American Express Platinum Card, as these are typically considered travel credit cards.

Earning transferable points
Transferable points credit cards enable you to earn points or miles when making purchases. You can then transfer these points or miles to travel partners for rewards like flights, hotel stays, and more. Different cards offer different currencies, usually referred to as "points" or "miles". All transferable reward credit cards, airline credit cards, and hotel credit cards possess their own currency that can be redeemed for travel rewards.
Travel credit cards feature varying rates for various purchase categories. For example, the American Express Gold Card earns 4 points per dollar spent on restaurants but only 3 points per dollar spent on flights directly booked with the airline or through Amex Travel. While the Amex Platinum could be more suitable for travel, as it earns 5 points per dollar spent on flights (directly booked with the airline or through Amex Travel, up to $500,000 per calendar year). The Amex Gold can be a valuable addition for Platinum cardholders who frequently dine out.

Redeeming points and miles
Once you've chosen a travel credit card and earned your welcome bonus, it's time to utilize those points or miles for free travel. There are numerous methods to redeem your rewards with travel credit cards. Many cards offer an online booking portal where you can use your rewards to book flights, hotels, and car rentals. Alternatively, you can transfer your points or miles to specific loyalty programs, often unlocking additional value.

It's up to you to determine whether a particular trip warrants utilizing your rewards. TPG's monthly valuations can assist you in evaluating whether the cost of a flight or hotel room justifies utilizing your points and miles. While some travel expenses may be more affordable when paid in cash, you can always save your points for indulgent experiences like splurging on a business-class flight to Europe or booking an overwater bungalow at a luxury resort.
Utilizing travel credit card portals
In the world of travel credit cards, the four major players are American Express, Capital One, Chase, and Citi. These issuers also operate their own travel portals, which enable you to earn and redeem points for travel.
Some issuers, such as Capital One and Chase, provide incentives for booking travel through their portals. However, booking through a portal isn't always the best option.
We don't recommend booking hotel stays through card portals, as they often don't honor elite-status benefits or award elite-qualifying night credits.
Fortunately, flights usually allow you to earn bonus points through both a card issuer's portal and the airline itself. Keep in mind, this does not apply to all cards. When it comes to paying in cash, there is generally minimal difference between booking through a portal or directly on the airline's website. If your travel credit card rewards you for booking through their portal, it's an excellent opportunity to earn extra points.
Related: A comprehensive guide to the Citi travel portal
Points and miles redemptions can vary significantly, especially when incentives to book through travel portals are involved. Overall, if used effectively, travel portals can enhance your points redemption experience. Always remember to compare prices and redemption values when booking through a portal versus directly with the airline.
Booking through a portal may complicate matters if you need to modify or cancel your flight.

Benefits of travel credit cards
Exclusive privileges with travel credit cards
Certain travel cards provide automatic elite status with various programs upon signup and can also expedite the process of achieving elite airline status by converting points to air miles. If you have a strong loyalty to a specific hotel brand, having elite status with that brand will be advantageous. You will receive benefits such as room upgrades, resort credits, early check-in, late checkout, and more. However, if your loyalty is not with a particular hotel brand, these privileges will not apply. The same principle applies to elite status with an airline – you will gain access to lounges, upgrades, increased baggage allowance, etc. When comparing the perks of different cards, it is important to realistically assess which benefits you will actually use.
Acess to airport lounges
Complimentary access to airport lounges is one of the desirable advantages of premium travel credit cards. Many premium travel credit cards include access to Priority Pass lounges, which grants you entry to airport lounges worldwide. These lounges offer a serene space to relax before your flight or enjoy a snack during a lengthy layover. Amenities may vary among lounges, but most of them offer features such as wifi, private seating, and refreshments.

TSA PreCheck & Global Entry
Both TSA PreCheck and Global Entry are expedited screening programs for travelers. TSA PreCheck expedites security screening for domestic flights, while Global Entry accelerates customs screening for international travelers entering the United States.
The application fee for TSA PreCheck is , and for Global Entry, it is $100. Once approved, the membership is valid for 5 years. Many travel credit cards offer statement credits for the application fee.

Travel insurance
Some travel credit cards include travel insurance. The coverage may vary from card to card, but typically includes trip cancellation and interruption insurance. This coverage can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars if unexpected circumstances arise during your trip.
Travel insurance can also cover incidents such as overnight hotel stays due to flight delays or illnesses that prevent you from traveling.

When to use rewards instead of cash
Deciding whether to use rewards or cash for travel expenses does not need to be a complicated task. If you plan to redeem your rewards for your next trip, it is important to check TPG's monthly valuations to determine if it is a good deal. For example, let's say you are considering redeeming points for your upcoming flight, which costs $525. However, Chase is currently offering the same flight for 40,000 points. According to TPG's valuation, Chase points are worth $0.02 per point. This means that if you redeem your points for this flight, it would be equivalent to spending 0 in Chase points. In this scenario, it would be more cost-effective to pay for the flight in cash and save your points for another trip.

Earning travel rewards
When comparing travel credit cards, it is important to consider the rewards that each card offers in relation to your spending habits and goals. If you prefer simplicity and ease of use, a flat-rate travel card that offers the same rewards rate for all purchases might be the best choice for you.If you want to maximize your points and miles and are willing to redeem rewards with a specific airline or hotel brand, a co-branded airline or hotel credit card may be a better fit. However, if you don't travel frequently or prefer a travel card with more flexibility in earning and redeeming rewards, a general-purpose travel rewards card that offers bonus points or miles for travel and everyday purchases might be a better option.
Redeeming travel rewards
When comparing travel cards, it is important to consider the redemption options and value offered by each card. Most travel cards provide the best value when you use your rewards to pay for upcoming travel, typically through the issuer's travel portal. However, if you prefer more flexibility, you may want to look for cards that offer a variety of redemption options, such as using points to cover past travel purchases, which allows you to book with third-party websites.Alternatively, you may prefer a card with transferable points, which allows you to transfer your rewards to an airline or hotel loyalty program. This can help you get more value out of your points and miles. While most travel cards with transfer partners have an annual fee, there are a few exceptions, such as the Bilt Mastercard and Capital One VentureOne card.
It is also important to consider the value of your points or miles, as their worth may fluctuate depending on how and where you redeem them. If you plan to redeem your rewards for something other than travel, such as statement credits or gift cards, make sure you choose a card that offers a redemption value of at least 1 cent per point or mile for those options. Otherwise, it may be more advantageous to use cash and save your rewards for travel redemptions.
Travel perks
The best credit cards for travel perks come with features and benefits that enhance your travel experience. If you enjoy traveling in style, there are cards that make it easier to achieve elite status or offer complimentary lounge access or travel credits worth hundreds of dollars, which can make first-class airfare or luxury hotel accommodations more affordable.Travel protections
Credit card travel insurance is a valuable feature that can save you from having to purchase standalone insurance and provide you with peace of mind during your trip. However, it is important to note that coverage and reimbursement amounts may vary between cards, so it is crucial to carefully compare the travel insurance offered by different travel cards.Reviews of the best travel credit cards

Other cards with an annual travel credit usually have more restrictions, limiting usage to flights or hotels booked through the card issuer's travel portal.

However, it does provide primary rental car insurance, a feature not commonly found among most travel cards.
Overall, the Capital One Venture X Rewards is a solid option that competes well with other premium travel cards, especially considering its relatively more affordable annual fee. However, if you prefer a less restrictive annual travel credit and a more comprehensive travel insurance policy, the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, our top pick for the best premium travel card, may be a better fit.

Ongoing benefits: While introductory APR and bonus offers are attractive, we focused on cards that offered year-round benefits such as travel insurance or cell phone protection plans.
Reward rates: Our preference was for cards that allowed users to earn extra points from travel expenses and provided substantial bonus rewards in popular spending categories like dining, supermarkets, or streaming services.
Redemption flexibility: We took into consideration the flexibility of redemption options. Though the alluring travel benefits and rewarding offerings of travel credit cards are tempting, it's essential to consider the pros and cons of each card to ascertain if it aligns with your travel and spending habits.- Travel at a lower cost: Travel credit cards provide numerous money-saving advantages for cardholders. These include high travel reward rates, sign-up bonuses, and travel credits, all of which contribute to reducing the overall cost of travel.
- Bountiful perks: The finest travel credit cards enhance your overall travel experience with perks such as room upgrades, free nights, statement credits, and access to exclusive lounges.
- Fast track to elite status: While earning elite status with rewards programs typically takes time, certain travel credit cards expedite the process for airlines, hotels, and car rentals. This means you can start enjoying elite status benefits sooner.
- Complex rewards programs: Keeping up with the intricacies of travel rewards card programs can be confusing, especially when it comes to redeeming or transferring points to travel partners. It requires careful planning and calculation to ensure you maximize the value of your rewards.
- Limited redemption options aside from travel: Although some cards offer redemptions for non-travel-related options like statement credits or gift cards, these redemptions typically yield lower value compared to travel redemptions.
- Annual fees: Determining whether an annual fee is worthwhile can be challenging, especially since the best travel credit cards often come with fees ranging from to 0 for premier travel cards.
How to Evaluate the Value of Your Points and Miles
To determine the value of your points and miles, divide the cost of the cash version of your booking (such as a plane ticket or hotel room) by the number of points or miles required. Then compare this figure to Bankrate's valuation for the airline, hotel, or credit card rewards program. For instance, if a flight on Southwest Airlines costs 0 or 50,000 miles, the value would be 1.6 cents per mile (0 divided by 50,000 miles equals $0.016 or 1.6 cents). Since this slightly exceeds our estimated value of 1.5 cents per mile, booking this flight would be a good deal.
However, if you redeem your points for a gift card and find that a $25 gift card costs 10,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards miles, the value drops to 0.25 cents per mile ($25 divided by 10,000 miles equals $0.0025 or 0.25 cents). Since this falls well below the desired value of 1.5 cents per point, it's better to use cash for the gift card and save your points for a more lucrative offer.
Maximizing the Benefits of Your Travel Credit Card
Whether you're planning a brief getaway or an extended trip, there are strategies to optimize your rewards from a travel credit card that can enhance your experience or help you save money. Whether your upcoming plans involve a trip to Walt Disney World, a ski resort, or a family gathering, here are some techniques you can use to elevate your future travels.- Seize a welcome offer: To make the most of your purchases and benefit from travel rewards, seek out a card with an attractive welcome offer and a reasonable spending requirement. Certain sign-up offers can be substantial enough to earn you free travel.
- Utilize bonus rewards categories: Look for a travel rewards card that provides bonus points for the types of purchases you're most likely to make. For example, the Citi® Premier card offers 3 points for every $1 spent at restaurants, maximizing your points earnings if you frequently have lunch outside the office.
- Consider cards with transferable points: Some travel cards offer transferable points, which can be redeemed within a participating rewards program. Based on Bankrate's latest point valuations, finding the right high-value transfer partner can be an excellent way to maximize your rewards.
- Leverage credit card benefits: Your travel credit card may come with hidden perks that can enhance your travel experience and save you money. Examples include complimentary breakfast at hotels or free checked bags. During one trip, a family of four can easily recoup the card's annual fee through baggage fee savings alone. Additional benefits like coverage for lost baggage provide peace of mind while traveling.
- Combine credit cards: Pair your travel card with another credit card that offers high rewards for your most frequent spending categories. It's even possible to combine cards within the same rewards program. Chase, American Express, Capital One, and Citi all offer excellent credit card combinations that enable you to accumulate transferable rewards.
- Avoid foreign transaction fees: Make sure to bring a card that doesn't charge these common fees when using it internationally. Many credit cards impose a 3% charge for international purchases. Selecting a travel credit card that waives foreign transaction fees, such as those offered by Capital One and Discover, can save you money.
